Sanding is the foundation of every great floor — get it wrong and no finish will save it. At Iconic Flooring we sand timber floors across Melbourne's eastern suburbs, Bayside and the Mornington Peninsula, from century-old Baltic pine to dense Spotted Gum, using a graduated grit sequence that leaves the boards dead flat and ready to take a flawless coat.
We work through multiple grit stages — typically a coarse cut to remove the old coating and level the boards, then progressively finer passes (commonly up to 100–120 grit) to close the timber and remove every scratch from the previous grade. Drum and belt sanders handle the open floor, edgers take the perimeter, and a multi-disc buffer blends it all so there are no edger swirls or drum lines under the finish.
Gaps are filled with a timber-matched filler slurry where appropriate, loose boards are re-fixed, and protruding nails are punched below the surface before the final cut.
We offer dustless sanding using a Bona FlexiSand system with HEPA extraction at both the drum and edger, capturing roughly 99.8% of airborne dust at the source. Most clients stay living in the home while we work room by room. Standard sanding with dust bags is also available if you prefer.
Softwoods like Baltic pine — common in Surrey Hills, Camberwell and Hawthorn period homes — cut fast and need finer grits and a light hand to avoid dishing. Dense Australian hardwoods such as Blackbutt, Spotted Gum and Jarrah wear abrasives quickly and take more time. We read the floor first and set the grit plan to suit the species and its condition.
Most full sand-and-coat jobs in Melbourne fall between $25 and $50 per square metre, depending on floor size, timber, condition and the finish you choose. We measure on site and give you a written, itemised quote — never a phone estimate.

EXCELLENT Based on 2 reviews Posted on Google Brandi FrazierTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had three flooring companies through our Camberwell Edwardian before calling Iconic Flooring, and all three told us the parquetry hallway was beyond saving. Iconic came out, assessed each individual block, identified which ones could be sanded and which needed replacing, and gave us a fixed-price written quote the same week. The restoration took four days. They used a combination of orbital and drum sanding to keep the herringbone pattern flat and even, brought in matched reclaimed timber for the damaged sections, and finished with a satin Bona polyurethane that suits the age of the house. The hallway now looks exactly as it should — like it was laid a century ago and cared for properly ever since. If you have parquetry or heritage timber floors in Camberwell or the surrounding suburbs and you've been told it can't be saved, call these guys first.Posted on Google Harold RiveraTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had Iconic Flooring come out to our 1930s Surrey Hills home to restore the original Baltic pine floors that had been under carpet for what looked like decades. From the first visit, the team knew exactly what they were looking at — they measured the board thickness, identified two sections that needed replacing, and sourced matching reclaimed timber before starting. The dustless sanding system meant we barely noticed they were working. By the third day the floor had three coats of Bona finish on it and looked better than I imagined it could. If you're in Surrey Hills or anywhere in the eastern suburbs and you've got original timber floors hiding under carpet, get Iconic Flooring in before you do anything else. These floors are irreplaceable and they clearly know what they're doing with them.

Yes — we use a Bona FlexiSand HEPA system that captures around 99.8% of dust at the drum and edger, so most clients stay in the home while we sand in stages.
Multiple — a coarse cut to strip and level, then progressively finer passes up to around 100–120 grit, finished with a buffer to remove all machine marks.
Most sand-and-coat jobs run 25–25–50 per square metre depending on size, species and condition, quoted in writing after an on-site measure.
Yes — pine is soft, so we use finer grits and a careful, even technique to avoid gouging or dishing, which is routine work for us in Melbourne’s period homes.
Most surface damage and old coatings come out in the cut; very deep gouges or dark stains like Black Japan need extra passes, which we’ll flag in your quote.
