Parquetry & Herringbone Floor Sanding in Melbourne

Parquetry is a different craft to sanding straight boards — and getting it wrong leaves scratches that show forever under the finish. At Iconic Flooring we sand and restore parquetry, herringbone, chevron and mosaic floors across Melbourne, using the multi-direction technique these patterned floors demand.

Why Parquetry Needs a Specialist

On a standard floor you sand along the grain. In parquetry the grain runs in many directions within the one floor — that’s the whole point of the pattern. Sand across the grain of any block and you get cross-grain scratching that catches the light. We use finer grits, orbital and detail sanders into the borders, and a careful sequence that respects the pattern, so the finished floor is flat and even with the geometry intact.

Patterns We Restore

  • Herringbone and chevron.
  • Mid-century mosaic / finger-block parquet, common in 1950s–60s Melbourne homes and apartments.
  • Versailles and basket-weave panels in grander period homes.

Repairs Before Sanding

Loose or lifting blocks — often from old adhesive failing or a past water leak — are re-glued or replaced with matching timber before any sanding begins. Gaps between the many small pieces are filled and levelled so the finish sits flat across the whole pattern. Our dustless HEPA sanding is a real advantage here, keeping dust out of the joins for a cleaner, more even coat.

This is part of our timber floor refinishing service; for plank floors see timber floor sanding, and to lay new pattern floors, parquetry installation. Read our full guide to parquetry and herringbone restoration. We work across the inner east and Bayside, including Toorak and Malvern.

Parquetry & Herringbone Floor Sanding FAQ

Yes — quality parquetry can be sanded and refinished, but it needs multi-direction technique to avoid cross-grain scratching, so it’s specialist work.

The grain runs in many directions and there are far more joins, so it needs finer, slower, more careful sanding and more preparation.

Yes — loose or missing blocks are re-glued or replaced with matching timber before sanding so repairs blend into the pattern.

Yes — 1950s–60s finger-block mosaic floors restore beautifully, and can be left natural or lightly washed for a modern look.

A clear matt or satin water-based finish shows off the pattern without glare and keeps the timber looking natural.
