Timber Floor Renovation Specialist in Melbourne

Some floors need more than a sand and coat. When carpet comes up to reveal century-old boards, or a wall line leaves a scar across the timber, that's renovation — and it's work we've specialised in since 2012. Iconic Flooring restores heritage and damaged timber floors across Melbourne's eastern suburbs, with the patience and reclaimed-timber stock these jobs demand.

Heritage Floors Under Carpet

Melbourne’s pre-war homes — the Victorians, Edwardians and Californian Bungalows of Surrey Hills, Camberwell, Kew and Hawthorn — often hide original Baltic pine, Jarrah or red gum beneath decades of carpet. Once the carpet, underlay and staples are out, we assess what’s underneath. Most period floors have at least one or two careful sands left in them, which is usually all it takes to bring them back.

Board Replacement & Repairs

Renovation often means repairs before refinishing: a hearth patch, a removed-wall scar, rot near an old wet area, or split and cupped boards. We source reclaimed Baltic pine and matching hardwood in period board widths, blend repaired sections into the original floor, and then sand the whole floor as one so old and new disappear into each other.

Period-Appropriate Finishes

Heritage timber looks best under the right finish — a clear, non-yellowing coat to keep pale pine natural, or a matched amber tone where you want to preserve an aged patina. We’ll advise what suits the era of your home.

This sits within our timber floor refinishing service, alongside timber floor sanding. Read our guide to restoring Baltic pine and period-home floors and to whether your floor can be sanded again. We restore floors across Surrey Hills, Camberwell and Kew.

Timber Floor Renovation FAQ

Usually yes — once carpet, underlay and staples are removed, most Melbourne period floors can be sanded back and refinished; we assess condition before quoting.

Yes — we source reclaimed Baltic pine and matching hardwood in period widths, blend the repairs in, then sand the whole floor so they disappear.

Most commonly Baltic pine, plus Jarrah and red gum, depending on the era and the suburb.

It can, but dark stains need extra sanding passes, which we’ll note in your quote.

Refinishing existing internal floors is generally maintenance and doesn’t trigger heritage planning — always check with your council if it’s part of a larger renovation.
