Timber Floors in Camberwell — What We See

Camberwell developed primarily between the 1890s and 1930s, with building booms in the Edwardian period (1901–1914) and interwar 1920s. The result is one of Melbourne’s most architecturally diverse heritage suburbs — Edwardian timber-fronted villas, Federation brick homes, Californian Bungalows, Spanish Mission, and Tudor Revival cottages.

What’s also common: original timber floors undisturbed for a century. Camberwell’s homes typically have Baltic pine in living rooms and bedrooms, jarrah strip flooring in some early hardwood-era homes, and ornamental parquetry in entrance halls and formal rooms — particularly in homes built between 1910 and 1935.

The parquetry in Camberwell heritage homes is a frequent restoration for us. Common patterns: herringbone (mostly jarrah or Tasmanian oak), Versailles parquet (typically larger homes off Riversdale Rd), and simple block parquet in entrance halls. Many of these floors have been covered by carpet since the 1960s and emerge in restorable condition — but they require the right sanding sequence (orbital, not just drum) and patience to retain pattern integrity.
