Staining lets you change the entire character of a floor without replacing a single board. At Iconic Flooring we stain timber floors across Melbourne using Bona water-based stain systems applied directly to the bare, sanded timber — the method that gives the deepest, most even, longest-lasting colour.
There’s a right way and a shortcut. The shortcut is tinting colour into the first coat of polish — but if that coat ever chips, the original timber shows through underneath. We apply pigment directly to the raw timber and then seal it under clear protective coats, so the colour is in the wood, not just on top of it.
The same stain reads warmer on Tasmanian Oak than on Blackbutt, and grain takes pigment differently across species. Before we commit, we lay sample patches on your actual sanded boards and let you see them in your own light at different times of day — so there are no surprises after the whole floor is done.
Open-grained oaks take colour beautifully and evenly. Resinous or very porous timbers can blotch, so they need the right products and technique — another reason we always sample first. Lighter stains also hide everyday dust better than very dark floors.
Staining is part of our full timber floor refinishing service. If you want to dramatically lighten or transform an existing colour, see timber floor colour change. EXCELLENT Based on 2 reviews Posted on Google Brandi FrazierTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had three flooring companies through our Camberwell Edwardian before calling Iconic Flooring, and all three told us the parquetry hallway was beyond saving. Iconic came out, assessed each individual block, identified which ones could be sanded and which needed replacing, and gave us a fixed-price written quote the same week. The restoration took four days. They used a combination of orbital and drum sanding to keep the herringbone pattern flat and even, brought in matched reclaimed timber for the damaged sections, and finished with a satin Bona polyurethane that suits the age of the house. The hallway now looks exactly as it should — like it was laid a century ago and cared for properly ever since. If you have parquetry or heritage timber floors in Camberwell or the surrounding suburbs and you've been told it can't be saved, call these guys first.Posted on Google Harold RiveraTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had Iconic Flooring come out to our 1930s Surrey Hills home to restore the original Baltic pine floors that had been under carpet for what looked like decades. From the first visit, the team knew exactly what they were looking at — they measured the board thickness, identified two sections that needed replacing, and sourced matching reclaimed timber before starting. The dustless sanding system meant we barely noticed they were working. By the third day the floor had three coats of Bona finish on it and looked better than I imagined it could. If you're in Surrey Hills or anywhere in the eastern suburbs and you've got original timber floors hiding under carpet, get Iconic Flooring in before you do anything else. These floors are irreplaceable and they clearly know what they're doing with them.

Yes — once sanded to bare timber, we can stain it lighter, darker or a completely different tone, then seal it under a clear finish.
Always. We apply sample patches to your own sanded boards so you can see the real colour in your light before committing.
We stain the bare timber directly so colour penetrates the wood; tinting into the polish is a shortcut that shows the original colour if the coat ever chips.
Not under a clear, non-yellowing water-based finish — that’s what keeps a whitewashed or limed floor looking pale.
We seal stained floors with clear Bona, Synteko or Loba coats chosen to suit your timber, colour and traffic.
