Timber Floor Staining in Melbourne

Staining lets you change the entire character of a floor without replacing a single board. At Iconic Flooring we stain timber floors across Melbourne using Bona water-based stain systems applied directly to the bare, sanded timber — the method that gives the deepest, most even, longest-lasting colour.

Stained Direct to Timber, Not Tinted Into the Coat

There’s a right way and a shortcut. The shortcut is tinting colour into the first coat of polish — but if that coat ever chips, the original timber shows through underneath. We apply pigment directly to the raw timber and then seal it under clear protective coats, so the colour is in the wood, not just on top of it.

Make A Booking

Always Sampled on Your Own Floor

The same stain reads warmer on Tasmanian Oak than on Blackbutt, and grain takes pigment differently across species. Before we commit, we lay sample patches on your actual sanded boards and let you see them in your own light at different times of day — so there are no surprises after the whole floor is done.

Colours We Work With

  • Whitewash and limed tones for a coastal or Scandinavian look — popular in Brighton, Hampton and Sandringham homes.
  • Soft greys and “greige” for contemporary interiors.
  • Natural and smoked oak tones.
  • Rich walnut, deep brown and classic Black Japan for dramatic, light-filled rooms.

Which Timbers Stain Well

Open-grained oaks take colour beautifully and evenly. Resinous or very porous timbers can blotch, so they need the right products and technique — another reason we always sample first. Lighter stains also hide everyday dust better than very dark floors.

Staining is part of our full timber floor refinishing service. If you want to dramatically lighten or transform an existing colour, see timber floor colour change. Timber Floor Staining FAQ

Yes — once sanded to bare timber, we can stain it lighter, darker or a completely different tone, then seal it under a clear finish.

Always. We apply sample patches to your own sanded boards so you can see the real colour in your light before committing.

We stain the bare timber directly so colour penetrates the wood; tinting into the polish is a shortcut that shows the original colour if the coat ever chips.

Not under a clear, non-yellowing water-based finish — that’s what keeps a whitewashed or limed floor looking pale.

We seal stained floors with clear Bona, Synteko or Loba coats chosen to suit your timber, colour and traffic.
